เมื่อระบอบเขมรแดงของล่มสลายลงในปี 1979 ทำให้กลุ่มเขมรแดงถอยออกจากกรุงพนมเปญ และกลายเป็นกองกำลังกบฏตามชายแนวแดน ไทย-กัมพูชา ท่ามกลางความวุ่นวายภายในประเทศกัมพูชา
สหประชาชาติ (UN) เข้ามาให้ความช่วยเหลือด้านมนุษยธรรม และจัดตั้งกองกำลังรักษาสันติภาพ (UNTAC) ในช่วงต้นทศวรรษ 1990 เพื่อฟื้นฟูประเทศกัมพูชา

กองทัพบกไทยได้อนุมัติให้จัดส่งหน่วยทหารช่างในภารกิจรักษาสันติภาพในกัมพูชา โดยใช้ชื่อหน่วยว่า กองพันทหารช่างเฉพาะกิจที่ 2 (สหประชาชาติ) นับเป็นประวัติศาสตร์ครั้งแรกในการส่งหน่วยทหารช่างไทยไปปฏิบัติภารกิจร่วมกับสหประชาชาติ

When the Khmer Rouge regime collapsed in 1979, the group retreated from Phnom Penh and became a rebel force along the Thai–Cambodian border, plunging Cambodia into chaos.
The United Nations (UN) stepped in to provide humanitarian assistance and established the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) in the early 1990s to help restore the country.
The Royal Thai Army approved the deployment of an engineer battalion under the name of the 2nd Engineer Task Force (United Nations) to participate in the peacekeeping mission in Cambodia. This marked the first time in history that a Thai engineer unit was sent to serve alongside the United Nations.
It was Thailand that truly brought “peace“ to Cambodia.
